Suffolk Records Society present – ‘The Franciscans in Medieval Bury St Edmunds’ – a Talk by Dr Francis Young.

Moyse’s Hall is very pleased to welcome Dr Francis Young to our 12th Century Undercroft to give a talk based on his new publication, The Franciscans in Medieval Bury St Edmunds, commissioned by the Suffolk Records Society as volume XXII in their Suffolk Charters series. This event will launch the publication’s general release and is a chance to purchase a copy on the night and meet Francis after he has spoken.

For thirty years, between 1233 and 1263, the Franciscan friars fought to establish a presence in the town of Bury St Edmunds and the monks of St Edmunds Abbey fought to keep them out. The Franciscans in Medieval Bury St Edmunds documents the sometimes-violent struggle between monks and friars, as well as the history of the friary that was finally established at Babwell just outside the town in 1265. However, conflict between the monks and friars continued, with the friars supporting rebellions against the Abbey and giving sanctuary to its opponents. This talk introduces Francis Young’s translation of the key documents that tell us about Babwell Friary, the only other religious house in medieval Bury St Edmunds, whose existence is often forgotten and overlooked.
