Archer was an Anglican minister and Coe a gentleman farmer and native of Mildenhall, where they happened to overlap for the last twelve years of the seventeenth century. The contrast between their lives, one doubtful about his allegiance to the Church and sometimes impoverished, the other more comfortable in both senses is well brought out.
