The Society’s next AGM and Book Launch will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th May 2019 at St. Andrews Church, Melton.

We will be launching our 62nd volume, The Loes and Wilford Poor Law Incorporation, 1765-1826 edited by Dr. John Shaw.

The Incorporation was one of 149 ‘corporations of the poor’ set up across England, long before the ‘workhouses’ of the Poor Law Act of 1834.  This is the first detailed exploration of the records of a rural corporation and reveals the Loes and Wilford organisation, covering thirty-three East Suffolk parishes, as being truly revolutionary.  Children were educated, the sick tended, work provided for the poor in the House of Industry at Melton, and punishment meted out to the indolent.
